From the NZ herald:
"The cyclist killed on Auckland's Tamaki Drive this evening fell under a truck when trying to avoid a parked car's opening door, say police.
The 27-year-old woman was riding towards Mission Bay when the accident happened shortly after 6pm.
"Despite emergency services best attempts she was unable to be saved and died at the scene," police said in a statement."
The accident happened at a spot that I always worry about, where there are a series of parked cars from people going to the beach on the left, and two lanes of traffic on the right. Many times, car occupants open their doors without looking and the cyclist is pushed out into the road.
This cyclist could have been me - I cycle that same road at that same time every day. Today was different, I had a function on at work, so stayed late, but it just goes to show how short life is.
Perhaps Auckland council will put in proper cycle lanes rather than make us share with bus lanes or drawing a line on the pavement and calling it a cycle lane, when its full of pedestrians, and torn up due to tree roots. A simple act would not only increase the number of cyclist commuters, but provide us with a safer place to ride.
Please Auckland council, I am willing to pay if you will help us to have a safer place to ride.
